Playoff push on the horizon for several Huskie teams in 2026

The Huskie women’s basketball team is in Alberta on the January 9-10 weekend to face the Pandas. USask is one of four schools with a perfect 10 and 0 record entering the 2026 calendar year.

Stand out Gage Grassick is second in the conference, averaging 18.3 points per game. The Prince Albert product also leads the conference with 67 assists. Maya Flindall is tied for second with a 41.6%, 3-point shooting percentage

Saskatchewan’s men’s basketball team hopes to see a push from its younger players in the second half of the season. The 2 and 8 Huskies ring in the new year in Edmonton against the Bears.

Veteran Easton Thimm is having a strong season, leading the conference with 10.4 rebounds per game. The 3rd-year, Holy Cross graduate, also leads Canada West with the best field goal percentage at 64.4% this season.

The UBC Thunderbirds visit the PAC for women’s and men’s volleyball matches on January 9th and 10th. The 10-4 USask women’s volleyball team is in third place in the Canada West standings behind 10-2 Thompson Rivers and 8-2 Alberta. Mary Rioflorido leads the conference with 144 digs in 12 games this season. Keely Anderson is fourth.

The men’s squad is 7-5 and has been led by Emmett Grhaam and Mathieu Methot. Graham is averaging 4.13 kills/set while Methot has a .460 hitting percentage.

The 8-6-2 Huskie women’s hockey team hosts the Manitoba Bisons at Merlis Belsher Place on January 9th and 10th. USask has won four of its last seven games and sits in third place in the Canada West standings, seven points back of Calgary with two games in hand.

Finnish forward Peppi Virtanen leads the conference in rookie scoring and is second in the conference with a 25% shooting percentage. Second year goaltender Clara Juca has an impressive 1.30 GAA in six games this season.

The USask men’s hockey team, which has won five of its last six, visits the Bisons in Winnipeg on January 9th and 10th. The 11-4-0-1 Huskies are a point behind second place Mount Royal in the Canada West, east division standings with two games in hand.

Fifth-year forward Chantz Petruic is fourth in conference scoring with 24 points in 14 games while rookie Conner Roulette is fifth with 23 points in 16 contests.

Other notes: After sweeping the Pronghorn Invitational, the Huskie wrestling teams prepare for the Golden Bear Duals and Open on January 16th and 17th.

The annual Winter Classic hockey game, supporting the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation’s “Win with Wellness” campaign, is set for Saturday, January 31st at 1:00 PM at Merlis Belsher Place.

The 2026 annual Huskie Women of Influence Breakfast is slated for February 10th at TCU Place.

USask will host the Canada West track and field championships on February 20th and 21st at the Saskatoon Field House.
