Nolan Maier added to University of Saskatchewan Huskie men’s hockey roster
A player familiar to Saskatoon hockey fans will be joining the USask Huskie men’s team for the remainder of the 2026 Canada West hockey season. Former Blade goaltender Nolan Maier has committed to the program after playing pro hockey in the United States. While playing with the Saskatoon Blades, Maier became the winningest goaltender in Western Hockey League history in 2022 with his 121st victory. He finished his WHL career at 122.(Daniel Hauser now holds the league’s win record, recording his 123rd victory in 2025.)
Maier, a Yorkton product, has played in both the AHL and ECHL since graduating from the WHL in the 2021-22 season. “He’s the winningest goaltender in Saskatoon Blades’ history”, said head coach Brandin Cote. “He kind of fell upon us with the new rules. We are really excited about that.”
With the release of James Venne, the Huskies have fifth-year goaltender Jordan Kooy, first-year keeper Bryan Thompson and now Maier on the roster. “We have some options now”, said Cote. “There is always that management piece. At the end of the day the best players are going to get a chance to play. I’d like to try get each goalie a game early (in 2026).”
With 12 games remaining in the Canada West regular season, USask trails second place Mount Royal by one point in the east division with two games in hand over the Cougars. The 11-4-1 Huskies visit the 6-9-1 Manitoba Bisons on January 9th and 10th in Winnipeg.
