A late start costs the Huskies

The Huskie women’s hockey team was upset by the Manitoba Bisons 4-0 at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday night in the first game for both teams following a long break.

Saskatchewan paid for a sluggish start by falling behind 2-0 after 40 minutes of play. The Bisons outshot the home side 15-4 after the first period and 25-8 after two periods. “We didn’t start on time”, said head coach Steve Kook. “We hurt ourselves tonight.”

Bison veteran Norah Collins scored her fourth goal of the season at 7:58 of the first period. Fifth-year Bison Julia Bird extended her point streak to five games with her sixth goal at 11:31 of the second period to make it 2-0.

“We could have predicted it”, said Kook. “We saw the energy going out in warm up. We saw the energy we had in the video session. We saw the energy we had in the locker room, getting ready for this. We were late coming out down the hall to when we usually do. We weren’t ready to start on time and when you get a team coming downhill at you, you are chasing the game.”

The Huskies even had a goal taken off the board in the final minute of the second period. USask defender Kendra Zuchotski put a puck past Bison goaltender Jenna Goertzen on a power play, however the goal was waved off when the Huskies had too many players on the ice. “That was a momentum killer”, said Kook. “Two people went out for one, which they weren’t supposed to. That’s when you can tell that your brain is not in it.”

Shayna Bannister and Kelsey Huibers rounded out the Bison scoring with back-to-back goals 24 seconds apart late in the third period. Huibers’ goal was scored into an empty net.

Bison goaltender Jenna Goertzen, who is in her third year of eligibility after playing at Carleton, made her first start for the Bisons and registered 15 stops for the shutout win. “I thought she did a really good job in just being calm”, said head coach Jordan Colliton. “She played the puck a lot, but when she needed to kill plays, she killed plays. She’s a team first player. I think that’s why our team played well in front of her, they wanted her to have success.”

Fifth-year Huskie goalie Colby Wilson made 27 stops. Saskatchewan was 0 for 5 was on the power play while Manitoba was 0 for 4. The Bisons improved to 5-8-1-3 on the season while the Huskies fell to 8-7-2. The teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 5:00 PM at Merlis Belsher Place.
