East division leading Mount Royal Cougars visit Merlis Belsher Place
The Huskie women’s hockey team hopes to withstand pressure, without feeling the pressure according to Huskie head coach Steve Kook. The Manitoba Bisons downed USask 4-0 and 4-1 in January 9th and 10th games and, as a result the U of M is just two points back of the Huskies for the third and final playoff spot in the east division of the Canada West standings with 10 games remaining.
On the heels of those losses the Huskies look to regroup as the 15-4-1, division leading, Mount Royal Cougars visit the Huskies on January 16th and 17th at Merlis Belsher Place. Kook says his team is must keep its composure to get back on track. “Whenever we’ve gotten to where we want to go, we’ve had some bumps in the road”, he said. We have taken some bruises and we’ve taken some licks…we can handle the hits we take.”
The head coach would like to see his veteran players not put too much pressure on themselves and return to the form that saw the team collect eight wins and have points in 10 of its first 16 games this season. “We are still young and right now our senior players are clutching the stick and feeling guilty for not carrying the load. Our team just needs to play loose.”
Kook spoke with HuskieFAN about last weekend’s games against Manitoba and the upcoming series against the Cougars.
