Huskies come up short in shootout loss to Pandas

Jan 24, 2026 | 12:24 AM

The Huskies women’s hockey team was on the verge of a regulation win but wound up settling for a single point in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Alberta Pandas on Friday night in Edmonton.

Jayde Cadieux’s first goal of the season looked like it might be enough until a late turnover led to a Pandas equalizer. Natalie Kieser scored the only goal in the shootout to lift Alberta to its eighth straight win over Saskatchewan.

In their first meeting of the season, neither team was able to seize the initiative through the first two periods of play, settling instead into a defensive battle with scoring chances few and far between. But the action picked up in the final frame and Cadieux broke the deadlock with a power play goal at the 7:48 mark, beating Pandas netminder Mackenzie Dojahn over the left shoulder with a wrister from the slot.

The Dogs subsequently killed off a penalty of their own and continued to stifle the Pandas attack as time wound down, but with just under two minutes remaining and Alberta’s net empty, Jadynn Morden intercepted a pass behind the Huskies goal and centered for Abby Soyko, who rifled home her seventh goal of the season to level the score.

The teams traded chances in overtime but both Dojahn and Huskies goaltender Clara Juca held firm, sending the game to a one-on-one contest. After the first four shooters failed to convert, Kieser slipped the puck between Juca’s pads, then Dojahn denied Cadieux to seal the victory for Alberta.

Juca finished the night with 28 saves while Dojahn turned aside 18 shots. The Huskies converted one of four power play chances and the Pandas were scoreless on three power plays.

Despite the loss, the single point moves USask back into sole possesion of the third and final playoff spot in the East Division after the Manitoba Bisons fell 3-2 to the MacEwan Griffins on home ice Friday. The Huskies are now 8-9-4 on the season. The Pandas leapfrogged Trinity Western into second place in the West Division at 9-6-6.

The teams will wrap up their two-game season series on Saturday at Clare Drake Arena with puck drop scheduled for 5 p.m. Fans can listen to all the action on the free HuskieFAN app.
