Huskies make it 16 in a row

There is only one undefeated team in Canada West women’s basketball. The defending national champion University of Saskatchewan Huskies moved to 16 and 0 on Saturday night with a 77-46 win over the Calgary Dinos at the PAC. The visitors jumped out to a strong 18-12 start after the first quarter, but the Huskies held to Dinos to just three second-quarter points while jumping out to a 29-21 lead at the break.

Ella Murphy Wiebe had six of her 18 points in the third quarter as the Huskies opened up a 47-32 lead after three quarters of play. Tea DeMong also had 18 points while Maya Flindall poured in 15 for the home side. Saskatchewan’s defense was strong, turning 20 turnovers into 26 points.

The Dinos were led by Pollyanna Storie and Kourtney Oss who had 11 points each.

The Alberta Pandas beat the Regina Cougars 66-61 on Saturday night, handing the U of R its first defeat of the season. The Huskies top the Prairie Division with a 16 and 0 record, Regina fell to 15 and 1, while Alberta jumped into third place at 13 and 3.

The Dinos’ men’s squad downed USask 95-74 in the late game. Hayden Fransen led the way for Calgary with 20 points, while Emmanuel Bonsu led all scorers with 22. The Huskies fell to 5 and 11 with the defeat.

The Huskie basketball teams host the U of R women’s and men’s squads on Thursday, January 29th at the PAC.
