Huskies face Cougars in huge late season series
After picking up three of four points against the Pandas in Edmonton on the January 23-24 weekend, the Huskie women’s hockey team has jumped into sole possession of the third and final playoff spot the east division of the Canada West standings. Now the challenge will be to stay there.
USask leads the Manitoba Bisons by one point and the Regina Cougars by four points as the teams’ head down the stretch. All three schools have six regular season games remaining. The Huskies face the Cougars in a big home and home series starting Friday, January 30th in Regina.
Huskie head coach Steve Kook was happy to see his team get a point in a 2-1 shootout loss on January 23rd in Edmonton before picking up a 3-2 shootout win over the Pandas the next night. Prior to that, the Huskies had lost four consecutive games earlier in the month. “(Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton) is such a hard rink to play in”, he said. “It’s fun when you play there, because you feel like you’ve overcome so much.”
4th-year forward Jayde Cadieux scored twice in the Panda series and added a shootout goal Saturday while 5th-year forward Sara Kendall also scored in the shootout in the road victory. Kook did mix the lines up for the Alberta series and it paid off. “The players that scored…we needed them to score”, he said. The team also approached the Alberta series with the right mindset. “We never really stopped working hard in practice. That’s due to the players and their leadership.”
