The Huskies women’s hockey team scored three times in the opening period and played one of its most complete games of the season en route to a 4-1 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in the Queen City.

Jayde Cadieux tallied twice in a 25-second span to open the scoring and the Dogs added a pair on the power play while delivering a strong effort in their own zone to secure two important points in the Canada West playoff race.

“I thought our forecheck was on point early on and we turned some pucks over and made them do some things that they didn’t want to do,” head coach Steve Kook said. “We found a lot of pucks that we were able to get to the net early and obviously Jayde found two of them.”

Cadieux opened the scoring at the 12:36 mark, keeping the puck on a two-on-one rush and sniping a shot just underneath the crossbar. Then on the ensuing shift, Paris Oleksyn broke up a clearing attempt along the left wing boards and the puck bounced right to Cadieux, who rifled it into virtually the same spot for her fourth goal in the last three contests after being held off the scoreboard for the first 20 games this season.

“I told her, ‘Boy, when the monkey falls off your back it really does,’ so hopefully she just keeps shooting,” Kook said.

The Huskies added to their total three minutes later thanks to some good old fashioned hard work on the power play as Sara Kendall poked home a loose puck on a goalmouth scramble. With that, the Dogs matched their single-game high in scoring in less than one period of action.

“I think it just helps us not relax but play the game that we want to play without forcing too much and I think that when we play the way that we want to and it’s working, it’s easier to keep the structure and keep on (the opponent),” Kendall said of the early outburst.

Regina settled down defensively in the second period but still couldn’t generate much at the other end of the ice. Huskies head coach Steve Kook credited his defence for minimizing the Cougars’ opportunities.

“They just made things simple. They kept the game in front of them. I thought our forwards did a good job taking their checks on the wall so they could keep the pucks in front of them but I thought in our zone, the D won puck races and made simple plays. If we can get out of our own zone cleanly that makes our life a whole lot easier,” he said.

After taking the game’s first five penalties, the Cougars finally earned some power play time of their own in the third, and on their second skater advantage, Kaylee Dyer roofed a shot past Colby Wilson to pull the home side back within two. But they couldn’t maintain the momentum thanks to a trio of penalties and with under two minutes remaining, Kahlen Wisener snapped a seven-game goalless drought with a five-on-three goal to seal the win for USask.

The Dogs outshot the Cougars 46-17 on the night and went two-for-eight on the power play while Regina was one-for-three.

The Huskies now sit at 10-9-4, six points ahead of the fifth-place Cougars and two up on the Manitoba Bisons in the race for the third and final playoff spot in the Canada West’s East Division. The Bisons fell 5-4 in overtime to the Alberta Pandas on Friday. Saskatchewan, Regina and Manitoba each have five games remaining on their regular season schedules.

The provincial rivals will conclude their season series on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
