Huskies down Dinos in series opener
Prior to last Sunday’s 4-0 shutout win over the Regina Cougars, the Huskie men’s hockey team had fallen behind in five straight games yet were able to win three of them. On Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place, USask jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on the way to a 4-1 win over a division rival: the Calgary Dinos. Connor Roulette and Raphael Pelletier scored two minutes and five seconds apart in what was described as a ‘complete effort by everyone’ by head coach Brandin Cote. “We talked about doing our work early”, he said. “You make it easy on yourself. You had to capitalize on your opportunities and we did that.”
The Dinos, who entered the night one point back of second place Saskatchewan in the east division, pulled to within one on a Brendan Lee power play goal in the final minute of the second period. Cote admitted he wasn’t happy with the officials on a late hooking call but was impressed with his teams calm throughout the game. “Our group stuck with it.”
In the third period fifth-year forward Dawson Holt gave the Huskies some breathing room with his 12th goal of the season at 10:18. “He’ s a guy that flies under the radar,” said Cote. “He just does all the right things then comes up in big moments. We are super lucky to have him leading out there.” Holt leads the Huskies in scoring with 33 points in 25 games.
Third year defenceman Cole Jordan lifted a puck into an empty net to round out the scoring. Huskie goaltender Nolan Maier made 15 saves for his fifth win of the season.
