Huskies blank Dinos to keep pace in playoff hunt

The Huskies women’s hockey team has become one of the top road teams in the Canada West and if things go according to plan they’ll have more chances to prove it this season.

Colby Wilson made 20 saves to earn her 10th career shutout as the Dogs blanked the Calgary Dinos 3-0 on Saturday for their eighth road win of the season, picking up two massive points to keep pace with the Manitoba Bisons in the race for the final playoff spot in the East Division of the Canada West conference.

The Huskies and Bisons have identical 11-9-6 records with two games left to play, however, the Bisons hold the tiebreaker. Manitoba defeated the Regina Cougars 6-1 earlier on Saturday.

Less than 24 hours after coming out on the wrong end of a wild, 7-6 shootout with the Dinos in which the Dogs felt they were the better team, they delivered another strong effort, extending their point streak to six games and spoiling Calgary’s senior night in the process.

“They were pretty motivated to get points. I think they know what our situation is but we talked after the game (on Friday), it would be disappointing to come out of this weekend and not get rewarded for our efforts,” head coach Steve Kook said.

But goals were much harder to come by in the rematch. The game remained scoreless for nearly 55 minutes before the Huskies finally broke through as Jessica Anderson banked a shot off Dinos netminder Alyssa Barrette from below the goal line for her second goal of the season.

Just over 90 seconds later, Jayde Cadieux provided some much needed insurance with an impressive solo effort, picking up the puck at center, racing into the Calgary zone and splitting a pair of defenders before sneaking a shot under the goaltender’s right arm.

The Dinos pulled Barrette with a minute and a half to go but the Huskies held firm and Kahlen Wisener sealed the victory with an empty netter, her team-leading ninth goal and fifth in a four-game scoring streak.

Saskatchewan outshot Calgary 27-20 on the night and both teams were perfect on the penalty kill with the Dogs nullifying five Dino power plays and the hosts killing three of the Huskies.

Kook continues to be impressed by the team’s resiliency.

“It’s been six games of doing the same thing. Rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat and it’s hard to keep that sort of intensity and that sort of grind and work ethic but they seem to dive into that sort of characteristic and that personality and that’s kind of who they are right now,” he said.

Now the Huskies become Dinos fans for the final weekend of the season — and vice versa — with Calgary set to face Manitoba while USask hosts the Mount Royal Cougars, who the Dinos are chasing for first place. The Dogs need to earn at least one more point than the Bisons over the last two games to secure the final playoff berth.

“That’s exactly what (Dinos head coach) Josh (Gosling) said to us. He said ‘good luck next weekend, sweep.’ I said, ‘yeah, you guys do the same,'” Kook said.

The Huskies and Cougars open their series on Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place with puck drop set for 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
