Playoff push falls short

A shutout loss means the Huskie women’s hockey team is shut out of the 2026 Canada West playoffs. The Mount Royal Cougars blanked the Huskies 4-0 at Merlis Belsher Place on Saturday night.

As expected, both teams pushed to dictate play early with the visitors opening the scoring.  Kaia Borbandy buried her third of the season at 11:29 to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

Saskatchewan had two of their four power play chances in the second period but could not put a puck past Saskatoon product Scout Anderson who made 13 saves for her 13th win of the season.

Cougar third-year forward Julia Duke scored on an MRU power play in the final minute of the second period to put the Cougars up 2-0. Huskie head coach Steve Kook said he liked his team’s game but admitted that the power play and pressure around the Cougar net could have been more tenacious.

Mount Royal opened a three-goal margin on a Jerzey Watteyne marker, 2:25 into the third period. There was some confusion as the officials blew the whistle around the time the puck went into the net. Referees Kate Sauser and Jess Coleman did not hold a lengthy meeting after the play and did not appear to communicate with the Huskie bench about letting the goal stand despite the whistle.

With Huskie goaltender Colby Wilson on the bench, third year Cougar Summer Fomradas put a puck into Saskatchewan’s empty net to round out the scoring with 3:45 remaining in the third period. Wilson stopped 18 of 31 Mount Royal shots on the night.

Manitoba’s 3-2 overtime win over the Calgary Dinos on Friday night lifted the Bisons into the third and final playoff spot in the east division. Manitoba has 30 points and Saskatchewan has 28 going into Saturday’s final night of the regular season, however the Bisons hold the tie breaker based on head-to-head matchups against USask this season.

With the victory, MRU secured top spot in the Canada West east division standings and has earned a bye through the first round of the Canada West playoffs. The Bisons take on the Dinos in a best-of-three divisional quarter-final.

The Huskies host the Cougars on Saturday afternoon at 5:00 PM where Saskatchewan’s graduating players will be recognized. Wilson, McKenna Bolger, Kendra Zuchotzki, Sara Kendall, Bronwyn Boucher, Paris Oleksyn and Jayde Cadieux will play their final games in a USask uniform.

Saturday’s game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app with pre-game coverage starting at 4:45 PM.
