Huskies roll past Cascades
The game may have gotten off to a more sluggish start than the University of Huskies are accustomed to but in the end, they followed the same script they’ve used all season and came away with a 96-58 win over the Fraser Valley Cascades in the Canada West quarterfinal. Maya Flindall led the way with 17 points, while Gage Grassick tallied 14, to go with four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Both teams struggled out of the gate in the first quarter with the Huskies opening up an 8-0 lead before the Cascades found their way onto the scoreboard with 4:13 remaining. Julia Tuchsherer was the one who broke the seal, on her way to an eleven point, four rebound performance, that also saw her commit seven turnovers.
The teams seemed to find their footing late in the quarter, as the Cascades pulled within four with Fania Taylor hitting a pair of free throws to make it 12-8, Saskatchewan. The Huskies held a 20-10 lead after the first, but pulled away for good in the second, outscoring UFV 31-12. Saskatchewan opened the second with a 17-4 run, keyed by eight points from Grassick. Saskatchewan led 51-22 at the half.
Huskie head coach Lisa Thomaidis went to her bench liberally in the second half as twelve of her players ended up seeing the floor for at least six minutes apiece in the game. Fraser Valley was able to hang with the Huskies in the third, being outscored by just four points, 23-19. Fania Taylor of the Cascades hit a big three-pointer at the 8:39 mark and then hit a layup with 6:51 remaining, both times pulling her team within 33 points. Taylor, a third-year transfer from the University of Ottawa ended the game with eleven points and five rebounds.
