Dinos down Huskies

The season was a historic one for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in Canada West women’s basketball, but on Saturday night it was the visiting University of Calgary Dinos that rewrote the history book with a 61-58 win in front of a stunned, near-capacity crowd, at the Physical Activities Complex.

In a tight, back and forth affair, it was the swarming defence of the Dinos that made the difference. The Huskies held a 19-17 lead after one quarter of play but in the second they were held to just ten points, as several Huskies players struggled with their shooting. Andrea Dodig led the way for the Huskies with 16 points, but would end up fouling out late in the game. Gage Grassick and Tea DeMong, who averaged 15.8 and 12.3 points a game in the regular season respectively, had trouble getting going. DeMong ended up with four points in the loss, Grassick had nine, hitting three of ten from the floor and just one three-pointer in six attempts.

Despite the struggles, the Huskies had a chance to tie late. Calgary’s Lilia Skumatova went one for two from the free throw line after being intentionally fouled. Ella Murphy Wiebe grabbed the rebound on the miss and got it into the hands of Grassick who tried to find an opening but the Dinos defence didn’t allow her to get a good look, or pass to an open teammate. A last second desperation heave came up short for Grassick, who like DeMong, Anna Maelde and Elliot Lieffers, sees her U of S Huskies career come to an end as fifth year players.

Christine Geraldo and Amelie Collin paced the Dinos with 15 points apiece; while Kourtney Oss had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. But first year head coach Sarah Besselink agreed that the smothering Dinos defence was the reason they won.

“Kudos to this team, they have really bought in to what we have been preaching defensively. They did a great job today, everything that the Huskies took, minus a couple shots, was contested,” Besselink said after the game.

Coming into the game, Saskatchewan had won 51 straight, dating back to November of 2024. And it was the same Dinos squad that dealt them that defeat.

“We have been saying all week we started the streak for them and we were coming in wanting to end it, and that’s exactly what we did and I’m super proud of my team.”

The Dinos will now advance to the Canada West championship game Saturday, February 28th against the UBC T-Birds, who beat the University of Regina 74-68 Friday night.
