Huskies chase second consecutive title

Pursuit of a repeat

The Huskies have secured an “at-large” berth to the 2026 U SPORTS women’s basketball championships in Quebec City from March 5th-8th. USask is the fifth seed for the eight-team tournament and will face the UBC Thunderbirds in their first game on Thursday, March 5th at 5:00 PM Saskatchewan time. After a 20-0 regular season, the Huskies suffered a 61-58 home court loss to the Calgary Dinos in the Canada West semi-finals on February 21st.

USask, the defending U SPORTS champions, have a deep and experienced team. Huskie fifth-year guard, Gage Grassick, was named the Canada West, women’s basketball player of the season for the second straight year last week. The Prince Albert product ranked among the conference’s top five in assists, steals, total points, three-pointers made, and total field goals. Coach Lisa Thomaidis, who last season set broke the conference’s all-time wins record, was the named the Canada West coach of the year for the third straight time.  

The Thunderbirds, who are seeded fourth for the tournament, suffered a 63-57 loss to the Calgary Dinos in the conference final. The Huskies defeated UBC twice the 2025-26 regular season by scores of 80-51 on November 21st and 93-70 on November 22nd.

Other Thursday games have #7 Carleton up against #2 UNB at 11:30 AM. The Dinos are the third seed and will face #6 McGill at 1:30 PM. The host Laval Rouget et Or are ranked 8th and will take on top seeded Toronto Metropolitan at 7:00 PM. (All Saskatchewan times.) TMU finished with a 20-2 regular season record and were 3 and 0 in the OUA playoffs.
