“My goal is to get back on the field, come August” – Anton Amundrud

He has returned to playing weight and plans to return to the Huskie football team in August. Quarterback Anton Amundrud, who last October was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma, is preparing to be on the field with his mates for the 2026 Canada West football season.

“I’m doing fantastic”, he said. “I love this sport and I love this team. There is nothing I want to do more than play football. It’s where I find joy. I want to play football with my friends!” The fifth-year USask pivot wrapped up six rounds of chemo treatment in early March. “I responded well to that. As of now, I’m in remission. I’m feeling great.”

Amundrud began a month long stay in hospital in Saskatoon on October 23, 2025, on the heels of health issues weeks earlier. “It all started at the end of September”, he said. “My eyes would go yellow. My liver was apparently enlarged; my spleen was enlarged. We did a bone marrow biopsy, and they figured it was T-cell lymphoma.” Complicating matters was the detection of HLH (Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis) as overactive blood cells attack the body’s own tissues.

“Chemo was an experience”, he said. “I’d go every 21 days. We did three days straight of CHOP cycle. They pumped me full of my chemo and then you’d spend 21 days recovering. Those weren’t always the easiest 21 days. Usually, you’d have aches and pains and nausea. You’d feel better by day 21, then you’ve got to go back and do another round.”

The intense treatments continued after he got out of the hospital in late November. “It was a lot better with the support I had”, he said. Amundrud leaned on teammates, including roommates Ryker Frank, Nathan Jule, Cam Skinner and Jordin Rusnack

Parents Paul and Jennifer,  who live in Lloydminster, were able to stay with Anton for an extended period of time last fall thanks in part to the football team, Huskie supporters and the larger Saskatoon community. “When I heard about all the support and the letters and notes people were writing and the money that was raised, that was crazy. There is no better place to be than Saskatoon. I couldn’t be happier that I decided to come to this school.”

Amundrud, who led Canada West football in passing in 2025 after five weeks with over 1,600 yards passing, 14 touchdowns and no interceptions, is getting into football form. He is at his playing weight of approximately 210 pounds after being at 173 when he was released from hospital. “As long as training is going well and my body is responding well to post chemo, (a return) is a high possibility.”

Huskie training camp begins on August 14th at Griffiths Stadium. Like many in the football community, head coach Scott Flory is thrilled about Amundrud’s progress. “We are so happy for Anton and the good news that his body cancer free. He has, and will continue, to receive outstanding care here in Saskatoon. It is an unpredictable disease and we just all want the best for him.”

When asked to comment on a return to the field for Amundrud in 2026, Flory responded, “The hope that he’ll be under center for us this year is very exciting. When he had to step away last year, he was the best quarterback in the country. The thought of him being able to return and finish out his eligibility as a Huskie, given what he’s gone through, is remarkable. I know he’ll put the work in and once he’s medically cleared. He’s our starting quarterback.”

The Huskie football season starts on Saturday, September 5th as USask visits the Manitoba Bisons at IG Field in Winnipeg. Festivities for spring camp start on Thursday, April 30th as Canadian Football Hall of Famer, Pinball Clemons, will be the guest speaker for the 2026 Dog’s Breakfast at Saskatoon’s Prairieland Park.
