The Manitoba Bisons continue to rise to the occasion when the Saskatchewan Huskies come to visit. The U of M downed the Dogs 40-22 on Saturday afternoon at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg, marking the third straight time that the Bisons have come out on top in the Manitoba capital.

Quarterback Cole Anseeuw, who last season was back up to Jackson Tachinski, engineered three touchdown drives in the second quarter to lead the Bison stampede. A 60-yard march culminated ended with a Gavin Perkins plunge for a touchdown as the Manitoba took an 8-3 lead.

On the Bisons next drive Anseeuw hit Brendt Adams on a 32-yard touchdown strike. Then with a minute and a half to go in the quarter Anseeuw connected with Nathan Udoh for an 11-yard score and it was 22-4 at the break.

USask quarterback Anton Amundrud stayed on the sidelines to start the second half after throwing for under 160 yards and no touchdowns in the first 30 minutes of the contest.

With third year quarterback Jake Farrell in the game Saskatchewan’s fortunes appeared turn around for a short time. Following a Taz Smith-Windsor interception, Kayden Miller got to the end zone on an 11-yard run and the Huskies had cut Manitoba’s lead to 23-10.

Late in the third quarter Manitoba came up with the play that appeared to put the game out of reach as Mikun Odunuga scored on a 69-yard pass and run play to make it a 30-12 ball game. Anseeuw had 248 yards in passing with three touchdowns and one interception.

In the fourth quarter the team’s exchanged TD’s. Gavin Perkins dove into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game after a Nic Periera interception for the U of M while Javin Boyntin scored a very late major for Saskatchewan.

Amundrud was 17/34 for 238 yards and one interception. Farrell had 79 yards in passing in relief. Manitoba’s defense also had two sacks on the day. Saskatchewan had no sacks and one interception. Huskie placekicker Lukas Scott was 2 for 4 in the field goal department; Bison kicker Maya Turner was 1 for 2.

The Bisons join the Regina Rams and Calgary Dinos with 1 and 0 records after week one of Canada West play, while UBC, Alberta and the Huskies are 0 and 1.

The Huskies host the Dinos on Friday September 11th at 7:00 PM at Griffiths Stadium.
