The USask Huskies are in a first-place tie for top spot in the Canada West football standings after a 65-12 route of the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday night at Foote Field in Edmonton.

Quarterback Anton Amundrud threw his first of six touchdown passes to Rhett Vavra three minutes into the ball game following a Lucas Scheck interception. Scheck, a third-year defensive back with the Huskies had a second interception later in the first quarter that set up a James Keane 30-yard field goal.

Saskatchewan’s special teams had two blocked punts on the night, the first set up an Aulain Penner four-yard run early in the second quarter. Amundrud then connected with Dawson Leannea, Keaton Belsher and Vavra for touchdown tosses as the Huskies juped out to a 41-3 half-time lead.

Early in the third quarter, Amundrud found Keaton Belsher for a 59-yard major and later Javin Boynton on a 19-yard TD play as the Huskies took a 55-12 lead to the fourth quarter.

Amundrud finished with 279 yards in passing on the night before coming out in the fourth quarter. The Lloydminster product moved in to 4th on the Huskies’ all-time completions list and five on the school’s all-time passing list with his effort.

Saskatchewan added a fourth-quarter score when back-up Jake Farrell hit Kyle Conteh on a 48-yard TD pass with nine minutes remaining in the game. Defensively, Evan Barsness and Jace Zidar had sacks for Saskatchewan as the Bears were held to 229 yards in passing. James Keane was 3-for-3 in the field goals department for USask.

Friday’s victory puts the Huskies in a three-way tie for top spot in the Canada West standings at 2 and 1 with Regina and UBC. The Thunderbirds beat the Rams 25-20 in Vancouver on Friday night.

The Huskies visit the Rams on Saturday, September 26th at 2:00 PM at Mosaic Stadium. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app with pre-game coverage starting at 1:45 PM.
