Huskies open season with shootout win in Calgary

Oct 9, 2026 | 11:23 PM

An impressive goaltending performance by Clara Juca powered the Huskies women’s hockey team to a 3-2 shootout victory over the Calgary Dinos on Friday night in Calgary.

The third-year netminder made 34 saves in regulation and overtime before fending off all three Dinos shooters in the skills competition as the Huskies opened the 2026-27 season on a high note.

The Dogs started the night strong, building a 2-0 lead in the opening 15 minutes on goals by Avery Gottselig and Jaiyana Nurani. Saskatoon native Sydney Mercier trimmed the lead in half with a goal to get the Dinos on the board late in the opening period.

The goaltenders took over from there, with both Juca and Calgary backstop Amelia Awad looking sharp throughout the contest. The Huskies nearly held on for a regulation win but Evelyn Lawrence equalized on a Dinos power play with just over three minutes remaining, sending the game to overtime.

The home side carried much of the play in the extra frame, outshooting Saskatchewan 5-0, but Juca stood tall to get the contest to a shootout, where Kahlen Wisener scored in round one to give the Huskies the advantage. Neither team scored in the second round and Mercier could not beat Juca in round three, cementing the win for the visitors.

The Dinos outshot the Huskies 36-29 overall while converting one of five power play opportunities. The Dogs had two power plays on the night and failed to score on either one.

The teams will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday with puck drop scheduled for 5 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena.
