Huskies open home and home with shootout win over Cougars

The Huskies men’s hockey team has sole possession of top spot in the Canada West standings thanks to a 3-2 shootout win over the Regina Cougars at Co-operators Arena on Friday.

Raphael Pelletier scored the equalizer for Saskatchewan with just over five minutes left in regulation and Liam Keeler netted the shootout winner in the fifth round of the skills competition as the Dogs secured their 10th straight victory in the Queen City, and 19th in their last 20 meetings with the Cougars overall.

The teams entered the home-and-home series with matching 3-1 records and both were looking to rebound from their first loss of the season. The Huskies drew first blood just shy of the seven-minute mark of the opening period as Rhett Rhinehart’s point shot found its way past Regina goaltender Damon Cunningham.

The Dogs looked poised to take that lead into the room but in the dying seconds of the frame, Cole Wirun took advantage of a turnover at the Saskatchewan blue line, beating Huskie netminder Nolan Maier with less than a second left on the clock to knot the score.

The Cougars grabbed the lead with the only goal of the second period as Jaren Brinson flipped the puck high in the air from his own zone to Otto Hanson at the Huskies line and the rookie forward converted the breakaway chance for his first U SPORTS goal.

The ice tilted in the Huskies favour in the third and Pelletier finally leveled the score at the 14:50 mark. Cole Jordan pinched down the left wing boards to cut off a clearing attempt and fed the puck to the fourth-year forward, who had time to wheel around in the slot and whip a shot past Cunningham for his team-leading third goal of the season.

The Huskies had power play opportunities to win the game late in the third period and in overtime, but Cunningham held the fort and forced the contest to a shootout, where Jaydon Dureau scored for Saskatchewan in round one and Ben Roulette equalized for Regina in round three.

After neither team found the net in the first round of extra shooters, Keeler fired a shot off Cunningham’s glove and in to give the Dogs the advantage. Maier then stopped Cougars captain Kade Runke to seal the deal.

The win moves USask into top spot in the West Division standings at 4-1 while Regina moves into second place with a 3-1-1 record.

The provincial rivals will reconvene at Merlis Belsher Place for Saturday’s rematch, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
