Huskies’ women’s baskeball coach Lisa Thomaidis is no longer in charge of Team Canada.
Huskies women’s basketball coach Lisa Thomaidis is no longer the coach of Canada’s National Women’s Basketball Team. According to basketball.ca, the team and Thomaidis mutually agreed to part ways.
Thomaidis was named Canada’s head coach in 2013, and was at the helm for two Olympic appearances in 2016 and 2020. Thomaidis also led Canada to gold medal showings at the 2015 Pan American Games, the 2015 FIBA Americans Women’s Championship and the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in 2017. In her nine years as coach of the national women’s team, Canada had an 83-44 record. Thomaidis served as an assistant coach for 12 seasons, prior to being named head coach.
This statement from Thomaidis was posted on Canada Basketball’s website. “Leading our Canadian Senior Women’s National Team over the last nine years has been the highest honour and an absolute privilege. Our accomplishments have been historic and ones that took working with a true team to achieve. Ultimately, I want to thank all the athletes, coaches, and staff who I had the privilege of working with over the years. It will be the relationships formed and connections made along this journey that I will always cherish. Through everyone’s passion and dedication, we elevated our program to where it is today. As I step aside, I do so with immense pride and satisfaction knowing that I gave everything I had to the program.”
Denise Dignard, the GM/Executive VP, Women’s High Performance had this comment as part of her basketball.ca statement. “After careful consideration and discussion with Lisa, we both recognize that this is a necessary step that our program must make in our continued pursuit of a place on the podium at the highest of international competitions, as well as for Lisa, both personally and professionally.”
