A rainy Saturday afternoon on the west coast served as the backdrop for a redemption rematch in Langley, B.C.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey team came out energized after being shutout Friday night, returning the favour with a 2-0 win over the Trinity Western University Spartans.

Kelsey Hall scored 5:48 into the opening frame, with an assist from Larissa Bohlken, nabbing her first U Sports career goal after registering a bodychecking penalty.

“I came out of the (penalty) box and figured I need to get the team going after they just killed for a penalty I took and sure enough, just happy it went in,” Hall said.

Hall was a scratch in Friday night’s double overtime 1-0 loss to the Spartans at George Preston Recreation Centre in Langley.

“I’ve been waiting for my moment and I just wanted to do what I could for my team,” she said. “I like to score goals anyway, so I kind of topped it off with getting to score.”

Continuing the Huskies’ strong start, first-year Mallory Dyer secured her first U Sports career goal with a pass from third-year Sophie Lalor at 14:31 in the opening frame.

“It was really exciting, and nice to score a goal as a team,” Dyer said. “We all worked together there and I thought it carried good momentum for the rest of the game.”

Huskies goaltender Camryn Drever made 27 saves for her first conference shutout of the 2021-22 season. Saskatchewan went 3-for-3 on penalty kills, while Trinity Western went 5-for-5 on the PK Saturday.

“Thought we played well tonight. Not a complete game, but probably our closest effort so far,” said Huskies head coach Steve Kook.

“I’m happy for Kelsey and Mallory. They played well and deserved their first U Sports goals.”

The Huskies fly out of Vancouver Sunday afternoon with a 3-3-0 record overall, 2-1 on the road, so far this season. They’ll have a weekend off before they host the University of Calgary Dinos at Merlis Belsher Place Nov. 12 and 13.

All Huskies women’s hockey games are broadcast on the HuskieFAN app and at huskieFAN.ca.
