Huskies women’s hockey look for another sweep at home

Flying high off a sweep at home last weekend, Huskies women’s hockey is back at Merlis Belsher Place bracing for turbulence against the Thunderbirds.

The University of Saskatchewan notched a season-high scoring night with an 8-1 win in their last game against the University of Calgary Dinos.

“Happy that some of those finally started to go in for us,” said Steve Kook, Huskies head coach on Wednesday. “Hopefully we will take some of that confidence and momentum with us into the game.”

Camryn Drever stopped 25 of 26 shots she faced in the win, which includes numerous breakaway stops throughout the night in what was perhaps her strongest start of the season.

Saskatchewan enters the second of back-to-back home weekends ranked fourth in Canada West, with a 5-1-2 record.

Huskies are tied for points at 12 with the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds; however, the T-Birds are ranked third with six wins and two losses on the season.

Kook said the team is dialled in on UBC, while still recovering from their physical play against Calgary.

Rookie forward Emily Holmes, who scored her first U Sports goal last Friday, is out for a while due to a fracture in her wrist from getting hit into the boards in the last match-up against the Dinos.

As for first years, all rookie Huskies have now had a game under the belt with Sara Kendall skating in last Saturday’s game. Kook said coaches are confident in the young squad, who all have feedback to work with.

“We all have video footage, we can learn from game film and stuff like that we’ve been doing over the last couple of days,” he said.

As for a back-to-back home sweep, Kook said the Saskatoon crowd certainly adds fuel to the fire.

“You could tell there was a jump in (the players’) step and the way they were looking around and celebrating, there was a little bit more energy there,” he said.
