Huskies women’s hockey shutout in road series against Mount Royal

Dec 4, 2021 | 11:08 PM

Coming off a 1-0 shutout loss Friday night, the Huskies women’s hockey team was hungry for redemption on the road to close the season for 2021.

Despite the hometown ties to Calgary for several Huskies players, fan support inside the Flames Community Arenas was not enough for the University of Saskatchewan to notch a single goal on the weekend.

Instead, the Mount Royal University Cougars keep their place atop the Canada West throne with matching 1-0 shutout wins Friday and Saturday.

“It comes down to consistency for us,” said Huskies captain Bailee Bourassa after the game. “Tonight we had spurs of greatness, but we also had little lapses. And that’s what it really came down to.”

Bourassa said leaving Calgary without any goals, despite many chances, is always tough.

“I’m really proud of our girls, we were crashing the net, but sometimes you just don’t get that lucky bounce. It’s important not to dwell on it too much. That’s also something we will need to work on going into the new year,” she said.

The lone goal of the night Saturday came 5:29 into the second frame off the stick of Tianna Ko, assisted by Laura Cook and Cougars captain Tatum Amy.

Cougars netminder Kaitlyn Ross made 19 saves for her first shutout of the season, on her third start for the team.

Huskies goaltender Camryn Drever got her tenth start in net for the season, making 25 saves on the night.

“That’s what we talked about as coaching staff, ‘wow, how good was Cam this weekend for us?'” said Huskies head coach Steve Kook.

“If Cam wasn’t holding onto the puck for us, getting whistles when we needed them, we got a little extended in the second period for sure, we would’ve been 3-0 heading into the third.”

Neither team was able to get going on the power play, with the Huskies going 0 for 5 on the player advantage and 2 for 2 on the penalty kill.

“I thought we had a real good third, obviously, tilted the scales a little bit. We hit two goal posts, had a couple of scrums around the net, I thought the puck should’ve gone in. There were some quick whistles,” said Kook.

“To take some positives away from this, when we’re good—we’re really good. We just need to figure out how to not have those lapses inbetween.”

Saskatchewan’s record drops to 6-4-2 on the season to close play for 2021, remaining roughly in the middle of the Canada West rankings as of last update.

The Huskies now head into the holiday break with a week of practice at home before optional skates begin and some players return home.

“We get a chance to reset, both physically and mentally, and that’s what we’re going to do. But at the same time. we talked about making sure we keep our eye on the ball of what we’re doing,” said Kook.

The Huskies women’s hockey season resumes in 2022 with a series at home against the University of Regina Cougars on Friday Jan. 14 and Saturday Jan. 15.
