Huskies women’s hockey to close regular season in Winnipeg

Feb 11, 2022 | 11:26 AM

Huskies women’s hockey could secure a home playoff series with a win on the road to close the regular season this weekend.

The team’s bus arrived nearly two hours later than expected Thursday night, after blowing snow and reduced visibility brought traffic to a crawl along Highway 1 west of Brandon.

With game-day skate cancelled in lieu of rest, the University of Saskatchewan is preparing off-ice to face the University of Manitoba Bisons at the Wayne Flemming Arena.

Puck drop is Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. Both teams have a bye the final weekend of Canada West play.

The Huskies are currently in sole possession of second place in the Canada West conference with 11 wins, five losses and two overtime losses for 24 points.

“The team has got a different vibe to it. A lot of confidence, they’re really loose,” Huskies head coach Steve Kook told HuskieFAN.

The Bisons (11-7-0) are fouth in Canada West, tied with UBC at 22 points after a pair of losses in Regina last weekend.

“We’re able to skate out of trouble with the abilities (on defence), and then we can start to make plays” – Steve Kook, Huskies head coach

Saskatchewan and Manitoba last met in Saskatoon on Oct. 29 and 30, the second weekend of the 2021-22 regular season.

Bisons swept the series with a 1-0 shutout in overtime the first night, followed by a 2-1 win the next. Sophie Lalor scored the lone goal for the Huskies in the series.

Second-half streak

Saskatchewan is now looking to extend its five-game win streak.

The team clocked a pair of 4-1 wins over the Grant McEwan Univerity Griffins to sweep their final home series of the regular season last weekend.

Huskies captain Bailee Bourassa had a stellar performance, notching her first career hat trick in Friday’s game.

The last hat trick scored in the women’s program came from Kaitlin Willoughby in the Canada West quarterfinal series against the Bisons at Rutherford Rink on Feb. 19, 2016.

Bourassa, the Huskies’ lone fifth-year, leads the team with seven goals and four assists for 11 points.

Huskies goaltenders Camryn Drever (8-5-1) and Colby Wilson (3-0-1) split the starts last weekend. Rookie Wilson continues to shine, allowing only two goals against in her four starts this season.

“Colby is a gamer, that’s for sure … when she’s in the net, she’s such an athlete that her pure instincts turn into fighting for whatever pucks there are,” said Kook, adding the netminders’ friendship plays a key role.

“Just the way those two interact, the team is starting to feed off that a little bit too, from their friendship.”

Kook said the Huskies young defence has also come a long way in their confidence, noting the strength of their skating ability.

“We’re able to skate out of trouble with the abilities back there, and then we can start to make plays,” Kook said.

Playoff Picture

It’s still unclear where the Huskies will rank at the end of the weekend, despite the outcome, as several teams in Canada West close out their regular season next weekend.

The top six teams in the conference qualify for playoffs.

Third and fourth-place teams host quarterfinal series against sixth and fifth-place teams, respectively, on Feb. 25-27.

First and second get byes to hosting semifinal series the weekend of March 4-6.

The Canada West Championship series will be hosted by the highest remaining seed on March 11-13.

The winner goes on to play in the U Sports championship series held in Charlottetown, P.E.I on March 24-27.

This weekend’s Huskies and Bisons matchup will make Canada West history, as the first time both home and away broadcasts are called by women.
