Postseason Play

Huskies men host Dinos, women travel to Bisons for hockey playoffs

The Canada West Hockey playoffs are soon upon us, as just four days away, both the U of S Men’s and Women’s Hockey teams will be undergoing battle in the quarter-finals.

The men, who hold a record of 13-7, will host the 12-7-1 Calgary Dinos at Merlis Belsher Place, for a best-of-three series, this Friday, Saturday and if necessary*, Sunday* as well, Feb. 25, 26 and 27*, with all games beginning at 7 P.M.

The Huskies have faced the Dinos four times this year, albeit two of which were exhibition games, with each team earning an exhibition and a regular-season win.

The first two meetings of the season took place in Saskatoon, with the U of S losing their first exhibition game of the season 7-2 on Sep. 17 and then coming back to beat Calgary the next night on Sep. 18, 6-4.

The next two meetings would first, extend the Huskies’ winning streak to seven games, as they then held a perfect 7-0 record at the time, after beating the Dinos 2-1 in double overtime, in Calgary, on Nov. 19. The Dinos then, however, would capitalize on their home-ice advantage the next night, Nov. 20, ending the Huskies’ perfect start, with a 2-1 win of their own.

Since then, the U of S has gone 6-7, including a season-high three-game losing streak that began on that second night, as they fell from first place in the conference to fourth.

The Huskies now have the chance, however, to make all of that a moot point, as they get home-ice advantage for this best-of-three series, against these same Dinos, with the winner moving on to the semis and the loser having their 2021-22 season come to an end.

When asked about this Calgary team and what the U of S can look forward to facing, Head Coach Mike Babcock told HuskieFAN this will be a tough and close battle and a chance for the Huskies to see what they’re made of.

“We won and lost to them, won in overtime, but lost at the end of the game to them too, it was really competitive, really close, low scoring games and I don’t expect this to be any different,” he said. “Ideally, we’ll get a little bit healthier, I’m not certain we will, but let’s get ready to go, it’ll be fun.”

“They’re a team of big, heavy backend, they play hard and they’re going to be a tough out for anyone,” said Babcock. “In saying all that, we think we know how to play too, so it should be a lot of fun. You play all year for these opportunities and for a chance to get to do this, so now let’s find out if we’re any good.”

For the U of S Women’s Hockey team, this weekend will be different than the men’s, as they face a different opponent in a different province.

The Huskies, who finished with an 11-7-2 record, good for fifth in the Canada West standings, will travel to Manitoba to face the fourth-seeded, 13-7 Bisons.

The Huskies have lost all four regular-season meetings between the two clubs this year, scoring only two goals in total, both from Sophie Lalor, and getting shutout twice.

They, now like the men, will get their shot at making all of that forgotten history, in a best-of-three series, this weekend, Feb. 25, 26 and 27*, if necessary. Friday and Saturday night’s games will both start at 7 P.M., with Sunday’s*, if necessary game, going at 3 P.M.
