Koshinski ready to lead Huskies in playoffs

Huskies women’s volleyball team hosts first round of Canada West playoffs

The Huskies’ women’s volleyball team has turned a significant corner. When fifth year outside hitter, Emily Koshinski arrived, the program was struggling. In 2016-17, the team had an 8 and 16 regular season record. In 2018-19 the team improved to 9 and 15. Just prior to the pandemic the program’s record was 14 and 10 in 2019-20.

This weekend the Huskies are hosting the first round of the Canada West playoffs on the heels of an impressive 14 and 2 regular season. (The 2021-22 campaign was shortened due to the pandemic.) Coach Mark Dodds gives Koshinski credit for the about face. “Emily has changed our program. She wanted to make our program relevant again and she has done that.”

Koshinksi, who is a Jansen Saskatchewan product, was first in points, second in service aces and third in kills in the Canada West regular season. “Our slogan this year has been Change the Code” said Koshinski. “It’s changing the way we play and changing the attitudes towards everything. Changing our culture. When you change everybody’s perspective, and that’s the expectation for younger players, then that’s the expectation for everyone to meet.”

The Huskies will host a four team Canada West first round playoff this weekend, with the top two advancing to the second round. Manitoba (6-10) faces the Huskies Friday, March 3rd at 6pm. On Saturday, March 4th, UBC Okanagan (8-8) will face the U of S at 6pm. The final match of the weekend will see the Huskies face Mount Royal (14-4) at 5pm on Sunday, March 5th. (All games will be at the PAC)

Dodds has talent throughout his roster. 4th year libero Jessica Andjelic was third in the conference in digs, while 3rd year middle, Mandi Fraser had the best hitting percentage in the conference. “The beauty of this team is, we have depth.” said Dodds. “We’ve had a pretty balanced attack. I think that is going to a long way in our success.”

With the momentum of a solid regular season, the Huskies don’t plan to make many alterations for the playoffs. “I don’t think anything should change.” said Koshinski. I think we go with the same attitude that we’ve had throughout the regular season. We get out own home court advantage, other teams have to travel to us.”

Dodds fully agrees with Koshinski’s assessment. “I think we’ve set ourselves up to be prepared for these moments. We’ve got a group here that’s ready!”
