Huskies women’s basketball team to host Can West Final Four
The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball will give an encore performance at the PAC in the 2022 playoffs. On Sunday the top seeded Huskies defeated the Calgary Dinos 72-62, at the Jack Simpson Gym in Calgary, in the first round of the Canada West playoffs. The University of Saskatchewan will now play host the conference’s final four tournament, March 18-20 in Saskatoon.
After being outscored by eight points in the first quarter the Huskies held Calgary to just eleven second quarter points, while putting up 18 to trail by one at the half. An 11-0 third quarter run helped the Huskies dictate play in the final 20 minutes of the basketball game. Third year guard Carly Ahlstrom, who finished the game with 24 points, had a 9 point third quarter (five from the three point line) to help the Huskies take a 57-52 lead.
Ahlstrom and Libby Epoch each had four points in a 15 point final quarter while the Huskies defense limited the Dinos to just 10 points in the final period. Gage Grassic had 16 points for Saskatchewan, while fifth year forward Summer Masikewich had 10.
The Huskies will face Lethbridge in their first game of the Canada West Final Four on March 18th. With play being limited to each division in the 2021-22 regular season, this will be the first meeting between the Pronghorns and the Huskies this season. Lethbridge finished on top of the central division with a 10 and 6 record. The Pronghorns defeated Trinity Western 76-67 on Sunday to advance. The Regina Cougars also punched their ticket to the final four with an 80-71 win over Alberta.
