Huskies face Golden Bears in CW Final Four match up

“He’s a legacy player.” That’s how University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s basketball lead assistant coach Chad Jacobson describes third year guard Alex Dewar. Dewar, and his Huskies’ teammates, are preparing for the first game of the Canada West Final Four, which is set for this weekend in Edmonton. The host Golden Bears, who are undefeated this season, face the Huskies on Friday night.

“It means a lot”, said Dewar. Alex’s grandfather, John Sr., played at the University of Alberta in the early 1950’s. John Sr. then came to the University of Saskatchewan for part of his working career. He was the head coach of the Huskies in 1960-61, then later became the dean at the College of Physical Education from 1977-85. John Sr. died in December of 2018.

Alex’s father, John, played for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies from 1981-86. (The ’86 season was the first time that the Huskies men’s team had ever made advanced to the national championship.) John Jr. passed away, at the age of 49, in 2013. “In high school I’d always wear a JD pin, his initials on my chest. I’d always touch that before a game.” Alex said. “Since I don’t have a pin on the Huskie jersey, I still always touch that left side…my heart. It motivates me to play hard for him, play for my family, and play for my team.”

The family ties don’t stop there. Alex’s brother Addison is a former U of S Huskie, while Alex’s uncle, Dan, served as an assistant coach with the team. “It’s a dream come true to play at dad’s alma mater, and where my grandpa worked”, Alex said. “Hopefully we can make them proud this weekend.” Jacobson is not only a fan of Alex Dewar’s talent, but his character. “He’s an even better person. He’s ready for this challenge.”

Challenge indeed. The Golden Bears were 16 and 0 in the 2021-22 Canada West regular season, while the Huskies finished with a record of 11-5. In giving an Alberta scouting report, Jacobson said he’s impressed with how well the Bears defend. “We’ll try play up tempo and get some points in transition. We’ve got strong guard play, and guys who can come off the bench, and provide a spark.” In last weekend’s 88-87 playoff win over UBC, 4th year guard Chan De Ciman and 3rd year guard Tyrese Potoma combined for 27 points. For Jacobson the key is simple. “It’s just about us playing to our strengths.”

The Huskies/Golden Bears match up is set for 6pm on Friday March 18th. The other final four match up has (17-1) Victoria taking on (12-4) Regina at 8pm. The winners then meet on Saturday for the 2022 Canada West title.
