A season ending Sunday for U of S basketball teams

A silver lining for the Huskies men’s basketball squad

An incredible season came to an abrupt end for the Huskies men’s basketball team in Edmonton on Sunday night. The Carleton Ravens defeated Saskatchewan 85-72 in the gold medal game of the USports Final 8 championships at the Saville Sports Centre. It’s the Ravens’ 3^rd straight national title, and 10^th in the last 11 seasons.

Saskatchewan did its best to keep pace early. 3^rd year guard Alex Dewar was good on two 3-point shots in the opening 10 minutes, but Carleton still had a 22-21 lead after the first quarter. The Ravens defense was solid early, holding Huskies’ leading scorer Marquavian Stephens to just 2 points in the first half.

Carleton took control of the game in the second quarter. Third year guard Aiden Warnholtz had 11 points in the quarter as the Ravens took a 45-31 lead to the break. Carleton 1^st year guard, Nelson Celien, pitched in with five points off the bench.

Momentum continued to go Carleton’s way in the third quarter as teams’ starters put up 18 points. 2^nd year forward Lloyd Pandi had 8 points, while 4^th year forward Alain Louis had 7. Stephens found his touch for the Huskies with a 9 point quarter, however Carleton still led 65-36 going in to the final 10 minutes of the contest.

Dewar had 13 of Saskatchewan’s 26 points in the fourth quarter, but the Ravens kept their distance. Carleton scored 20 points or more in each of the four quarters of the contest. Warnholtz was the leading scorer for the Ravens with 18 points, while Dewar had 27 for Saskatchewan. Stephens had 16.

All three of Carleton’s victories at the 2022 USports championships were over Canada West opponents. (Victoria in the opening game, Alberta in the semi-final, and the Huskies in the gold medal game.)

The Huskies women’s basketball team defeated UPEI 80-48 in the fifth place game of the USports women’s championships in Kingston on Sunday. Fifth year forward Summer Masikewich led Saskatchewan in scoring with 18 points. Ryerson won the gold medal with a 70-48 win over Winnipeg.
