The Huskie football team treated over 6,000 fans to dominant football and fireworks on Friday night at Griffiths Stadium. Saskatchewan defeated UBC 29-10 in the 2022 edition of the annual homecoming game.

The Huskies didn’t waste time in bringing the crowd to its feet. Ryker Frank capped off a four play 75 yard drive with a 13 yard score to give the home side a 7-0 lead two minutes in to the football game. Frank, who took over the feature tail back duties for the injured Josh Ewanchyna, had 124 yards in rushing.

After UBC tied the contest on an Isiah Knight 19 yard TD pass, Saskatchewan took the lead for good later in the opening quarter. Former Thunderbird, Ted Kubongo, scored on a 2 yard pass from quarterback Mason Nyhus. Kubongo, who played in UBC in 2018 and 2019, transferred to Saskatchewan for this season. “I loved it from the get go,” Kubongo said, when asked about playing his first home game with the Huskies.

Saskatchewan took control in the second quarter when Rhett Vavra hauled in a 29 yard pass from Nyhus to make it 21-7. Saskatchewan’s final touchdown came in the fourth quarter when backup quarterback Ethan Watson scored on a two yard run with 5:30 remaining. Nyhus finished the night with 28 completions for 362 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Nathan Jule, John Stoll and Connor Delahey registered sacks for the Huskies. Thunderbirds’ second year quarterback Garrett Rooker had 199 yards in passing before being replaced by Derek Engel in the second half.

The Huskies have now won 13 straight games at Griffiths Stadium, and feel the atmosphere played a role in the win. “It was awesome, this is a huge advantage to us”, Huskie head coach Scott Flory said when asked about the crowd. “They love us, they support us, and they want to be out here watching these guys.”

While the result was what the team wanted, there are some areas of Saskatchewan’s game that need attention. The Huskies took several penalties. (12 infractions for 135 yards.) “In 4 plays we had 55 yards in penalties”, said Flory. “That is debilitating. We’ve got to clean that up on our end.”

The 2 and 0 Huskies visit the Regina Rams on Saturday September 17th at Mosaic Stadium. The Rams, who are also 2 and 0 on the season, defeated Calgary 32-24 on Friday night. Alberta moved to 1 and 1 with a 34-11 win over winless Manitoba.
