The Huskie football team is undefeated at the mid-way point of the Canada West football season, following a 38-16 win over the Alberta Golden Bears at Foote Field in Edmonton on Friday night. Saskatchewan took a 25-10 half-time lead thanks in part to running back Ryker Frank and receiver Rhett Vavra.

Late in the first quarter Frank scored on a 2 yard run, then Vavra hauled in an 18 yard pass from quarterback Mason Nyhus 17 seconds in to the second quarter. Nyhus, who also connected with Branson Pipko for a touchdown in the second half, had 351 yards in passing. Saskatchewan also had 190 yards in rushing. (Frank had 128.)

Even though the Huskies have a perfect record, many on offense felt it was less than a perfect game. “We had highs and lows”, said Nyhus. “I don’t think we’re necessarily satisfied..we left a lot out there.” Despite putting up 528 yards in total offense, Huskie head coach/offensive co-ordinator Scott Flory agreed with his quarterback’s assessment. “We’ve got to finish drives and stay on the field a little bit better.”

When drives stalled, Saskatchewan turned to its fifth year kicker. David Solie booted five field goals with the longest being 44 yards late in the fourth quarter.

The Huskie defense was again solid, taking advantage of Alberta miscues. Bear quarterback Eli Hetlinger was 20 of 40 with three interceptions. Saskatchewan second year defender John Stoll, from Melville, caught an errand Hetlinger pass in the first half. He was quick to credit his defensive teammates when discussing his first interception of his USports career. “Everybody out there is playing for each other. Guys play together and connected”, said Stoll. Katley Joseph and Nixen Voll also had interception for Saskatchewan.

Kolby Hurford scored Alberta’s only touchdown on a 31 yard pass from Hetlinger in the second quarter. The Bears, who now fall to 2 and 2 on the season, were undisciplined taking 153 yards in penalties on 14 plays.

The Huskies, who are 4 and 0 for the first time since 2006, host the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday September 30th at Griffiths Stadium at 7pm. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app, and HuskieFAN.ca
