Canada West leaders prepare for Saskatoon showdown
The province’s two Canada West football teams meet for a second time this season on Saturday at Griffiths Stadium. Most university football fans in Saskatchewan believe it should be like this every season. The 5-0 University of Saskatchewan Huskies host the 4-1 Regina Rams in a clash at the U of S campus.
The Rams are coming off a 19-14 win over the Alberta Golden Bears on October 1st. Regina’s defense held Alberta to just 52 yards in rushing. “They’re known to be good defensively”, said Huskie head coach Scott Flory. Regina fifth year defensive end Anthony Bennett, from Weston Florida, has six solo sacks in five games this season.
The Huskies did come away with an 11-10 win over the Rams on September 17th at Mosaic Stadium, however points were tough to come by for both teams. Saskatchewan’s David Solie was forced to punt the football 9 times in the contest. We had a bunch of second and medium situations where we didn’t execute”, said Flory. “Those turned in to 3 or 4 punts where we shouldn’t have punted.”
In the two games since, the Huskies have put up 38 (vs. Alberta) and 43 points (vs. Manitoba) respectively. Saskatchewan fifth year quarterback Mason Nyhus had more than 300 yards passing in each of the two games. While there is always great interest in Ram/Huskie matchups at Griffiths Stadium, Flory extends an open invitation to those who haven’t seen Nyhus play.
