Kendra Zuchotzki scored overtime winner

Huskies win thriller over T-Birds

Another night, another overtime game at Merlis Belsher Place. All three of the Huskie women’s hockey team’s home games have gone to extra time this season. On Friday, Saskatchewan pulled out a 3-2 win over UBC in the first game of a weekend series in Saskatoon. 2nd year defender Kendra Zuchotzki scored the winning goal, on the power play, at 3:13 of overtime.

With a face off to the left of the Thunderbird net, Kennedy Brown won the draw and Zuchotzki put the puck past UBC goatlender Elise Hugens. “It was a great win by Ken”, Zuchotzki said. “She had a great game.” Saskatchewan head coach Steve Kook was asked about Zuchotzki’s play on the point for the offensive zone face-off. “Right person, right shot”, he said.

Trailing 2-1 in the third period, Saskatchewan’s Emily Holmes scored on a brilliant end to end rush at the 11:24 mark. That goal gave the Huskies energy for the remainder of the final period and for overtime. Grace Elliot opened the scoring for UBC, but Saskatchewan’s Taylor Wilkinson tied the game with a first period power play marker. Ireland Parrot of the Thunderbirds scored the only goal of the middle frame.

Goaltending also played a role in the win according to Zuchotzki. 4th year goaltender Camryn Drever made 27 stops. “I’ve got to give a shut out to her”, Zuchotzki said. “She played unreal tonight and kept us in the game.” Drever is now 2 and 1 on the season.

UBC’s coaching staff appeared to be frustrated with the officiating on more than one occasion, as the Huskies were 2 for 9 on the power play. Kook was generally pleased his Saskatchewan’s special teams. “I thought we moved the puck really well”, he said. “With the exception of one power play, we had some good looks, and some good shots.”

Saskatchewan now sits in a second place tie with UBC, two points back of front running Mount Royal, in the Canada West standings. The second game of the series is Saturday night at 7pm at Merlis Belsher Place and this Huskie team, which is now no stranger to overtime hockey, is confident. “We know we can outskate UBC”, Zuchotzki said. “It’s just a matter of keeping that in our heads. If we can chip pucks by them, they won’t keep up with us.”

The Thunderbirds defeated the Huskies in two straight games last February for the Canada West championship. While some may see Friday’s victory as a measure of revenge, Kook doesn’t see it that way. “We are six games in. I don’t think we have a point to prove.”
