Huskie men’s hockey team sweeps T-Birds

The Huskies overcame another slow start to secure a weekend sweep of the UBC Thunderbirds with a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon in Vancouver.

Jared Dmytriw scored twice in the third period, Connor Hobbs notched a goal and two assists and Roddy Ross made 34 saves to ensure that the Dogs would return home with four points from their trip out west.

It didn’t look like that would be the case early on, as UBC outshot USask 17-5 in the first period. But as he did in Friday’s win, Ross held the fort, allowing his team to escape the frame in a scoreless tie.

The Huskies emerged from the first intermission with more energy and the scoreboard soon reflected that as Hobbs opened the scoring less than three minutes in, firing a low slapshot that got through traffic and beat Tbirds netminder Kaeden Lane.

“I liked our response after the first period. We had a little chat in the room and we competed a lot harder, we came out and we responded well,” head coach Brandin Cote said.

The fight to stay in first

A few minutes later, the Dogs doubled their lead on the rush. After receiving a Tate Olson pass at centre, Chantz Petruic hit a streaking Cael Zimmerman in stride and the rookie forward snapped a shot from the high slot past Lane for his third goal of the season.

It appeared that the Huskies would take that lead into the intermission but with less than a second left in the period, Cyle McNabb cut the lead in half with a shorthanded goal, UBC’s second in as many games.

That seemed to give the Thunderbirds a lift and early in the third, Sam Huo knotted the game at two, burying a rebound off a Josh Williams shot.

However, the Huskies would retake the lead on the power play as Dmytriw had time to pick his spot and snipe his fifth of the year from the top of the right circle.

UBC continued to press though and a few minutes later on their own man advantage, Liam Kindree beat a screened Ross to tie the game once more.

But just 28 seconds later, Dmytriw stepped up again, gloving down a long pass from Hobbs in stride and speeding down the right wing and behind the net before wrapping the puck around the far post before Lane could get across.

“There’s lots of guys that are gonna step up in different situations. Tonight was my night and it’s going to take everyone here throughout the year to find a way to win,” Dmytriw said.

As for Hobbs, his three-point effort gives the Huskies captain 12 points this season, tied for the conference lead.

The Thunderbirds pressed for the equalizer but Ross made several stops down the stretch and a stick-less Alec Zawatsky made a key shot block in the final minute at the end of a lengthy shift to preserve the win.
