Alberta pulls out one goal game

A late comeback effort came up just short as the Huskies women’s hockey team as dropped a 2-1 decision to the Alberta Pandas on Friday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.

The Dogs had a flurry of chances in the final minute with goaltender Camryn Drever pulled for an extra attacker, but Alberta’s Halle Oswald saved her best for last, holding off the visitors to preserve the win.

That kind of offensive pressure was nowhere to be found to start the game. The Huskies were on their heels early after taking a pair of penalties in the opening five minutes and mustered just two shots on goal in the first period.

“The last three games were slow starts and today was particularly bad. I think we played seven minutes of good hockey and they were all at the end of the third period,” head coach Steve Kook said.

Despite failing to capitalize on either of their first period power plays, the Pandas continued to carry the play and eventually caught the Huskies out of position as Prince Albert native, Abby Soyko, got behind the defense and broke in alone to open the scoring at the 13:31 mark.

The Huskies had a somewhat better start to the second period but less than five minutes in, Allison Reich sent a rebound knuckling over Drever’s shoulder and into the net to make it 2-0. Alberta outshot Saskatchewan 21-8 through 40 minutes of play.

In the third, the Pandas retreated into a more defensive posture but the Huskies weren’t able to solve Oswald until Mallory Dyer scored her second goal of the season to break up the shutout with less than five minutes to go.

“It just looked like a scrambly game all over. We had turnovers all over the place and people out of position so it’s hard to take anything away from the competition after a game like that. You really just have to put that one behind you,” Kook said.

The Huskies will have to do that quickly as they return to the ice seeking a split of the weekend set at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
