“Our focus is playing our game on Saturday.” – Scott Flory

“Our focus is getting back on track!” That was Huskie head coach Scott Flory’s take on this Saturday’s home game against the Calgary. The 6 and 1 Huskies close out the Canada West regular season against the 1 and 6 Dinos at 1pm at Griffiths Stadium.

The Huskies are out to right some wrongs following a 35-29 loss to the Thunderbirds in Vancouver last Saturday. The Thunderbirds took a 14-0 first quarter lead, then put up 13 points in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. “We preach start fast and finish strong”, said Flory. “We didn’t do either of those.”

There were some bright spots in the loss. Flory pointed to Saskatchewan’s final drive of the football game. With 44 seconds remaining, Huskie quarterback Mason Nyhus, and the Huskie offense, moved the ball 71 yards to the UBC 17 yard line. On the final play of the game Nyhus just missed connecting receiver Caleb Morin in the endzone. The Huskie head coach said that it was as good of a drive as you will see anywhere.

The Dinos are a younger team, led by second year quarterbacks Matteo Spoletini and Daniel Sananes. Spoletini was the starter in Calgary’s 44-5 loss to the Huskies in week one back on September 2nd. However, Sananes has been at the controls for the majority of Calgary’s games this season. The Dinos’ lone win was back on October 15th when they defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 24-11.

“I see a team that is committed to a young quarterback”, said Flory. “They’re a good football team, they’re just young.” The priority for Saskatchewan is getting back to playoff calibre football with the Canada West semi-finals set for Saturday November 5th. “They (Dinos) are going to be playing footloose and fancy free on Saturday”, said Flory. “We just have to make sure we are up to the task.”

While the first place Huskies have home field advantage throughout the Canada West playoffs, there is lots to be determined before the semi-finals. UBC (4-3) visits Alberta (2-5), while Manitoba (3-4) is in Regina (5-2) in other October 30th matchups. The Bisons secure a playoff spot with a win over the Rams. The Golden Bears would take the fourth and final playoff spot if they defeat the Thunderbirds and the Bisons lose to Regina.

Wray Morrison and Matt Morrison will have the call of the Dino/Huskie game on the free HuskieFAN app, HuskieFAN.ca, 900 CKBI, Beach Radio 750 and 1050 CJNB starting at 12:50pm.
