Sweeping up in Regina

Huskie women’s hockey team wins again in Regina

The Huskie women’s hockey team can break out the brooms for the first time this season after defeating the Regina Cougars 2-1 to earn a series sweep of their provincial rivals.

Kendra Zuchotzki opened the scoring less than three minutes in while Mallory Dyer netted the eventual game winner early in the second period. Camryn Drever made 25 saves to preserve the victory in her first start after the bye week.

“Me and (goaltending coach) Sheldon (Goertzen) had a talk after Alberta and how we wanted to go through the bye weekend and come into Regina,” Drever said. “We just wanted to focus on that mental game and getting that swagger back and tonight felt really good.”

On a night when winter blasted into Saskatchewan, wreaking havoc on travellers across the province, a storm seemed to be brewing inside Co-operators Arena too. The Huskies and Cougars engaged in a scrappy affair that saw the two squads whistled for six penalties apiece – a tally that included four bodychecking minors, two roughing calls and a boarding penalty.

The feistiness was at such a level that the officials pulled the team captains aside on multiple occasions to try and keep a lid on things.

“It’s game two, points are meaningful. We have a lot of Alberta kids on our team, they have a lot from Manitoba but it doesn’t matter, it’s Saskatchewan and Regina and they get into it,” head coach Steve Kook said. “I enjoyed it. This is exactly the type of game that we needed coming out of the break to get us emotionally involved.”

In the end, it was Saskatchewan coming away with the two points despite a strong push from Regina in the third period, when they held an 11-2 edge in shots on goal. The Cougars outshot the Huskies 26-17 on the night.

The win pushes the Huskies record to 5-3-2 and as they approach the midway mark of the season Kook knows how valuable a sweep can be.

“Points are really important right now. I still didn’t think we played great. We played good enough but there’s still work to do. You see some other teams swept this weekend so it’s important to keep up with that pack,” he said.

The inclement weather forced the Huskies to stay in Regina Saturday night, but upon their eventual return they’ll get to enjoy back-to-back series’ at home, starting Friday when the MacEwan Griffins pay a visit to Merlis Belsher Place.
