Cougars down Huskies in final minutes to avenge Friday loss

Nov 19, 2022 | 7:42 PM

After nearly three periods of shutout hockey, it was the visiting time that broke the ice and stole a win from the Huskies Women’s Hockey team.

Kiana McNinch scored on a sharp angle backhand with 2:58 left in the third period to lift the Mount Royal Cougars to a 1-0 win over the Huskies on Saturday night.

Just a day earlier, the Huskies shutout the Cougars by the same score thanks to 30 saves by goalie Camryn Drever.

Drever, once again, got the start in net hoping to build off the momentum from the previous game.

The match was even througout the 60 minutes as both teams exchanged shots on the power play and at even strength.

Kaitlyn Ross, who started in the game on Friday for the Cougars made 24 saves in the victory as the visitors once again outshot the Huskies, this time by a count of 25-24.

After the game Head Coach Steve Kook said they just have to get focused on their next series.

“The last couple weeks all we’ve done is focus on how we play and sometimes we just get too caught up on who we’re playing and what style we need to play,” he said. “This weekend showed that if we just play the way we can do it, it doesn’t matter who is out there.”

Kook said this weekend was the most complete set of games the team has played all weekend, going skate to skate with one of the top ranked teams in the country.

The Huskies are in Winnipeg next weekend for two games against the Manitoba Bison.

Puck drop for the games on Nov. 25 and 26 bare at 7 p.m. on HuskieFan.ca and the HuskieFan app.
