Head coach Scott Flory and team make the most of first full day in London

Nov 24, 2022 | 8:53 PM

Thursday was an event filled day for the University Saskatchewan Huskies after arriving in London on Wednesday evening. Early in the day, coach Scott Flory, defensive backs Charlie Ringland and Katlyn Joseph and quarterback Mason Nyhus met the media. Laval coach Glen Constantin, quarterback Arnaud Desjardins and defensive back Maxym Lavallee represented the Rouge et Or.

Nyhus has graciously handled numerous media requests this week. When asked about Laval’s defense, Nyhus says he is familiar with many of their stars, including RSEQ all-star middle linebacker Alec Poirier. “I played football with Alec on Team Canada about seven years ago. He’s a good player. He’s going to be a tough test.”

As is always the case in sport, competition gets tougher at playoff time. Laval allowed just an average of just 14 points per game in the regular season, but that points against number has increased to 23.6 in the playoffs. When asked to describe Laval’s defense, Nyhus was concise. “Fast, physical and well coached”, he said.

Laval took part in an early practice on Thursday at Western Stadium followed by the Huskies at 1:30pm eastern time. The London, Ontario temperature climbed to warmer than 10 degrees allowing the Huskies to make the most out of their practice time. When assessing Laval’s offense, head coach Scott Flory expects the Rouge et Or to get the ball to slot back Kevin Mital as often as they can. “I’d probably do the same thing”, said Flory. “He’s a talented kid.”

Mital won the 2022 Hec Crighton award as the most outstanding player in USports football at the awards banquet on Thursday evening. Mital set a program record with 12 touchdown catches this season, along with 751 yards in receiving.

Head coach Scott Flory chatted with HuskieFAN’s Wray Morrison about last weekend’s adventure in Antigonish in the Uteck Bowl, and about facing Laval in Saturday’s Vanier Cup.

Both teams quickly exited the awards ceremony on Thursday night to get ready for Friday’s prep day, before Saturday’s showdown.

The JP Metras Trophy for lineman of the year was awarded to UBC’s Theo Benedet. The Presidents’ Trophy for defensive player of the year went to Nicky Farinaccio of the Montreal Carabins. McGill’s Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald was awarded the Peter Gorman Trophy as 2022 rookie of the year. The coach of the year award went to Gary Waterman from STFX.

Huskie receiver Daniel Perry was named a first team All-Canadian, while Nyhus was named to the second team, along with Saskatchewan teammate Charlie Ringland. Fourth year kicker David Solie was one of three special teams’ all-stars.

The Huskies and Rouge et Or will each practice one more time on Friday in the lead up to Saturday’s Vanier Cup matchup at Western Alumni Stadium.

HuskieFAN’s Wray Morrison and former Huskie Rich Gabruch will have the call starting at 11:50 Saskatchewan time on 900 CKBI, 1050 CJNB, Beach Radio 750, as well as the free HuskieFAN app.
