Huskies hold off Bisons to avenge Friday loss

Jaxan Kaluski scored the game winning goal in the third period, and the defence did the rest as the Huskies beat the Manitoba Bisons 4-3 on Saturday night.

That win follows a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to the Bisons the previous day.

It was clear from the start of the game that redemption was in the eyes of the Huskies as they came out hitting hard and taking advantage of early opportunities.

The team scored its first goal off a tipped shot from the blue line that eluded Bisons goaltender and former Nipawin Hawk Ross Hawryluk.

Chatz Petruic made it 2-0 after sniping a quick pass from Mark Rumsey.

The Bisons had their first power play midway through the first period, but the Huskies scored early as Shane Collins took a shot that squeaked between the pads of Hawryluk and trickled past the goal line.

However, the Bisons would fire right back as Codey Behun took a rebound and fire it between the pads of Huskies goalie Jordan Kooy, to make it 3-1 for the Huskies.

The second period belonged to the Bisons as they scored twice, once on a penalty shot from Brett Davis and another on a four minute powerplay from Devon Skoleski.

Despite giving up three unawnswered goals, Huskies Head Coach Brandin Cote told his team to take it easy.

“The message was just (that) we needed to take a deep breath and settle down,” he said. “We were just a little bit uptight here the last little bit because things have not been going our way and so we just had to settle the guys know and just let them know to compete and find a way.”

The third period would see a lot of chances from both sides and the goaltenders were tested early and often.

However, the Huskies would reclaim the lead thanks to a shot from Jaxan Kaluski.

The Bisons did everything they could to tie the game and force another overtime, but the defence and Jordon did their job, preserving the 4-3 win.

The final shots on goal were 37-28 in favour of the Huskies.

After the game, Cote said aside from a few questionalble calls, his team did what they needed to do.

“Yesterday we didn’t get the result we wanted,” he said. “Our penalty kill has been really good. Our guys battled hard.”

The HUskies have a short break before they play Regina in a makeup game on Tuesday. The team hosts the University of Calgary Dinos next weekend at Merlis Belsher Place.

“Calgary is playing well,” said Cote. “We’ve got a pretty big rivalry that’s been growing with them over the last couple of years. It’s going to be an exciting finish to the first half against them next weekend.”
