Huskies women open new year with 2-1 home win over Spartans

Kenzie Lausberg notched her first goal as a Huskie in the team’s final game of 2022.

Now she’s got another, a game winner, to start 2023.

“Emily Holmes does want me to mention that she did say we would go out and score,” Lausberg said, laughing after the game.

“I didn’t know it went in until Shelby Williamson started screaming. So that’s always a nice surprise.”

The fourth-year spent played her first two U Sports seasons with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. That program folded in 2020, with Lausberg resuming university hockey last season with Saskatchewan.

“This is the most goals I’ve scored in a season now, so two goals is a lot for me. It’s nice to feel like I can put together some offence,” she said.

It was also the fourth-year’s first time playing centre, as the Huskies shuffled lines to accomodate several injured teammates heading into the weekend.

Rookie Williamson was credited her second U Sports assist on the goal that came 9:01 into the third period, leading Saskatchewan to a 2-1 win over Trinity Western University.

Since later in the first period, the Huskies had been tied 1-1 with the Spartans — both goals coming from players named Kara.

Saskatchewan fourth-year Kara Kondrat recorded her fourth goal of the season 5:04 into the opening frame, helped by Sophie Lalor and first-year Jayde Cadieux.

Kondrat and Lalor now have 10 points each, tied with rookie leader Wilkinson who missed her first game of the season Friday with a lower body injury.

But back-to-back Huskies penalties led to a five-on-three chance for the Spartans in the final minute of the first period.

That’s when rookie Kara Yackel let one fly past the shoulder of Huskies goaltender Cameron Drever for her second U Sports goal.

Trinity Western’s Amy Potomak, the lone fifth year on the ice between both teams, and Saskatoon product McKenzie Mayo got the assists.

Saskatchewan was unsuccessful on all four power play opportunities, while going three for four on the penalty kill.

Drever finished the night with 27 saves while Spartans’ netminder Mabel Maltais turned away 18.

Saskatchewan’s record improves to 11-5-3, while Trinity Western drops to 9-8-2. Friday’s game marked the teams’ first meeting in Saskatoon, with both of their previous weekend series being played in Langley, B.C.

Saturday’s rematch at Merlis Belsher Place will mark head coach Steve Kook’s 400th Canada West game behind the bench.

Kook started with Huskie Athletics for the 2005-06 season and since then, he has been awarded the U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Coach of the Year award twice.

He also guided the women’s hockey team to their first-ever Canada West Championship in 2013-14 and U Sports bronze medal in 2021-22.

Puck drop is 7 p.m. Saturday. Daniella Ponticelli had the call live on huskiefan.ca and on the HuskieFAN app.
