Huskies women’s hockey is heading home without a win, or points, on the west coast.

The conference-leading UBC Thunderbirds scored in each period for a 6-0 shutout win over the University of Saskatchewan Saturday.

After the game, Huskies head coach Steve Kook said the team had difficulty after a bad start, trailing 3-0 in the first twenty minutes.

“You get chances to reflect throughout the season and a lot of the time, as athletes, you choose to reflect on the positives,” Kook said after the game.

“You get opportunities to reflect on bad performances, too … so this might be that reflection point. I hope so.”

Huskies second-year Colby Wilson got her eighth start in net this season, her second ever against UBC, finishing with 22 saves on the night.

On the other side, UBC netminder Elise Hugens notched her third shutout in 12 starts this season. The Sherwood Park product turned away 21 to stay perfect.

Thunderbirds opened scoring 4:08 into the first period with a goal from Ireland Perrott assisted by Mackenzie Kordic.

That was followed by Grace Elliott’s short-handed marker, helped by Joelle Fiala, at 14:41.

UBC’s third goal of the opening frame came courtesy of Cassidy Rhodes assisted by Hannah Koroll at 16:32.

First-year Rhodes ended with quite a night — getting her second goal, unassisted, halfway through the second period, and helping on both third-period goals for the T-Birds.

The first of the final frame scored by Kordic, plus a power-play marker from Perrott that also helped by Jacqueline Fleming.

UBC’s weekend sweep on the west coast drops the Huskies record to 12-8-2 on the season, with 27 points to maintain fourth in Canada West Standings.

The Thunderbirds, now 16-2-2, remain the conference leaders with 34 points.

The Huskies return home Sunday afternoon and will get set for a home series against the University of Alberta Pandas next weekend.

Alberta (16-5-1) is currently second in Canada West with 33 points, while Mount Royal University sits third with 31 points.

Huskies last played the Pandas Oct. 21-22 in Edmonton, where Alberta took a home sweep.

Friday’s game on Jan. 20 is this year’s Hockey Fights Cancer night for Saskatchewan.

Puck drops 7 p.m. both nights at Merlis Belsher Place. Daniella Ponticelli has the call on huskiefan.ca and on the HuskieFAN app.
