Huskies ‘Play for a Cure’ night to honour aunt of goaltender Wilson

Colby Wilson is getting the start in net on a night dedicated to one of her biggest supporters.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies goaltender says she could always count on a game-day message from her aunt, Trisha Larsen, who would be in the stands whenever she could.

“She was awesome. Super funny and so nice. Literally lit up the room everywhere she went,” Wilson said.

Larsen was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2021. The disease occurs within the tissues of the pancreas, a vital endocrine organ located behind the stomach.

Wilson said her aunt didn’t let the diagnosis get in the way of living life on her own terms.

“She travelled the world and went on huge mountain biking expeditations and paddle boarding and she got to see all of her family,” Wilson said.

Larsen lost her battle to pancreatic cancer on Oct. 26, 2022, at the age of 57. She is survived by her husband, two sons, her sister and parents.

On Friday, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey team will host its 14th annual Play for a Cure night against the University of Alberta Pandas.

Wilson said the Huskies asked first if they could dedicate the special game to Larsen.

“Her oldest son, and my cousin, Jared, grew up playing goalie. So hockey was always a huge part of her life,” Wilson said.

“It’s cool that we can say goodbye to her this way. She would really like this.”

The team will wear custom black and purple uniforms, the colour representing pancreatic cancer, with Larsen’s initials on the sleeve. Those will be auctioned off to fundraise for pancreatic cancer research.

A silent auction, featuring some sentimental and handmade Huskies items, will also take place throughout the game on the concourse.

Wilson’s mother and grandfather will do the ceremonial puck drop at 7 p.m.

“It’s really meaningful to me and my entire family,” Wilson said.

“I hope with the money we raise that we can help other families that are going through this situation.”

This weekend’s series is the third last of the 2022-23 regular season for the Huskies.

Saskatchewan (12-7-3) maintained its fourth-place standing in Canada West despite being swept by the division-leading UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver last weekend.

Alberta (16-5-1) is also hungry for points. The team currently sits second in the conference, one point behind UBC with 33, after sweeping Trinity Western University in Edmonton last weekend.

The Pandas are riding a seven-game win streak, while the Huskies are looking to stop a two-game losing skid.

Saskatchewan has a bye next weekend before hosting a Saturday and Sunday series against the University of Regina Cougars on Feb. 4 and 5.

Their final weekend series of the regular season takes place in Calgary against the Mount Royal University Cougars on Feb. 10 and 11. Canada West playoffs start the following week.
