The Huskie men’s hockey team suffered a 3-2 set back to the Mount Royal Cougars on Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place, however Saskatchewan held its own against the top two scorers in Canada West hockey. Riley Sawchuk and Nolan Yaremko, the only 40 point players in the conference, did not get on the scoresheet.

“Their big guys didn’t get a point”, said Huskie head coach Brandin Cote. “Their depth guys found a way to score.” Moe Hakim scored his first goal of the season in the second period to give Mount Royal a 1-0 lead. Saskatchewan notched the equalizer :48 seconds in to the third when Jaxan Kaluski buried his 11th of the season.

The Cougars were able to score two goals less than five minutes apart later in the final frame to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Blake Stephenson gave the Cougars a one goal lead with 8:09 remaining, then Spencer Moe scored with 2:59 left to make it a 3-1 contest. The Huskies cut the lead to one when Justin Ball was credited with his 7th of the season with 42 seconds left.

Huskie goaltender Roddy Ross, who has 8 wins in 15 games this season, was tested at times in a 29 save performance. “Roddy played really good, he gave us a chance”, said Cote. Mount Royal’s Shane Farkas made 23 saves for his 4th win of the season in 6 games.

Cote admitted that there is a fine line between winning and losing against a deep team like Mount Royal. “Little details”, he said. “In playoff hockey, that’s the difference between winning and losing. The only time we get in to trouble with those guys is when we turn the puck over because they are a quick transition team.”

Fourth line forward Aiden Bulych returned to the line up after missing some games due to injury. “The good thing is we have some depth”, said Cote. “There were some positives for sure tonight.”

The second game of the series against Mount Royal, which is also the final game of the regular season, is set for Saturday afternoon at 5pm at Merlis Belsher Place.
