Huskies to begin season in Edmonton against U of A

Jun 23, 2023 | 5:17 PM

The University of Saskatchewan Huskie men’s and women’s basketball teams will begin their regular seasons in Edmonton against the University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas.

Both will play a combined 20 games (against 10 opponents) in hopes of advancing to the Canada West playoffs, should they be a top-12 team.

For the first time ever, both championships will move to a single-site format, with the University of the Fraser Valley playing host to the women’s tournament in Abbotsford and the University of Manitoba doing the same for the men’s tournament in Winnipeg.

The Huskies will start the season on the road, before competing back at the PAC in Saskatoon for three of the following four weeks leading up to the Christmas break.

“The ability to stay home and be in one place will be great for hopefully creating a nice little bit of success, buzz, momentum and trying to make our gym a tough place to play,” said Jaime Campbell, the men’s head coach. “Getting three home weekends in a row definitely allows us to have that opportunity, so we’re excited.”

The second half of the season will be a little more difficult down the stretch. In six 2024 matchups (12 games), the Dogs will only be home twice (four contests).

“Those trips in January, definitely a bit of a long haul, the Brandon bus trips are never easy,” added Campbell. “Flights are a little bit easier on the travel, but not too easy places to play at Victoria and UNBC, and even that sandwiched in with a home weekend with Regina, which are always tough games, there’s just not a lot of easy weekends in our season.”

The men will be working all year to bounce back from their 2022/23 season, in which they missed the playoffs after posting a 5-15 record, which included a 1-9 start (after winning their first game) and a four-game losing streak to end the year.

As for the women, they finished first in the Canada West regular-season standings last year with a 17-3 record, before eventually losing to the Pandas in the semi-finals.

The championship tournaments will run from February 21-25 in 2024.

Neither U of S team has the championship hosts on their schedule this year, but are hoping to book a ticket to their respective arenas.

“I think we’re gonna have a team that’s going to be ready to compete with all those teams,” Campbell told HuskieFAN.

“That’s always the goal, you want to get there and you want to get to play at the championship sites. With the new tournament format in one location that does make it a little bit easier travel-wise… and you know that no matter what, you’re gonna have to go on the road and win three or four games in a row if you ever want to have that chance go to Nationals this year.”

~ HuskieFAN also reached out to women’s head coach Lisa Thomaidis for comment, however, she was unavailable as she was busy coaching the German National Team.
