Lalor Leads Huskies To Victory

So far, so good for Saskatchewan’s women’s hockey squad

The Huskies women’s hockey team is heading into its first bye week of the season with a perfect record after sweeping the MacEwan Griffins with a 4-2 win in Edmonton on Saturday.

A pair of goals 17 seconds apart in the second period made the difference as the Dogs overcame some undisciplined play in the first half of the game to improve to 4-0 on the season. Saskatchewan also maintained its unbeaten run against MacEwan, which now stands at 6-0 since the Griffins joined the Canada West two seasons ago.

“Timely goals and goaltending. That’s what saved us tonight,” head coach Steve Kook said.

Sophie Lalor staked Saskatchewan to an early lead, scoring her third goal of the season just 1:36 into the contest, but instead of building momentum from there the Huskies ran afoul of the law, taking four penalties in the opening frame, including two minors 25 seconds apart that gave the Griffins a lengthy 5-on-3 power play. Only a strong effort by goaltender Colby Wilson, making her first start of the season, kept the visitors in front after one. The Griffins outshot the Huskies 14-5 in the frame, exceeding their entire shot total from the previous night.

“We didn’t have a chance to talk a whole lot about it (during the game) because we were too busy killing and trying to figure out how to get our game back into shape,” head coach Steve Kook said. “But when we get back home that’s one of the things that I told the coaches we’re gonna have a look to see how many unforced penalties that we took.”

Saskatchewan started to get back on track in the second, but MacEwan’s Brianna Sank proved tough to beat until a shot from Isabella Pozzi banked sharply off a defender’s skate and past the helpless netminder to make it 2-0.

That turned out to be an important goal as less than two minutes later, Tess Collier beat Wilson to cut the deficit in half. However, much like the night before when the Griffins equalized in the third period, the Huskies had a swift response. Late in a MacEwan power play, a turnover sent Jayde Cadieux in alone on a shorthanded breakaway and the second-year forward beat Sank up high for her second goal of the season.

“It’s a pretty great feeling. I was sad last year not to score but getting this on early in the season is super exciting for me and obviously the team,” Cadieux said.

With the Griffins still reeling from that body blow, the Huskies pounced again. Off the ensuing draw, Lalor entered the offensive zone and followed her own shot to the net, putting a rebound past Sank. The goals came 17 seconds apart and gave the Dogs all the breathing room they would need.

While MacEwan managed to get one back in the third, the Huskies locked things down, allowing just six shots in the final frame.

“We’ve been really good at preserving wins and we had a real good, solid third in doing that,” Kook said. “It does matter how we played but at the end, we need points when we can get them. Sweeps in this conference are hard to get.”

The win leaves Saskatchewan atop the conference standings as the only undefeated squad in the Canada West. They’ll have next weekend off before heading to Regina to face the Cougars in the first game of a home-and-home set on October 20.
