Rookies rally Huskies to road win over Alberta

A pair of first-year Huskies made a major impact in their first foray into one of hockey’s best rivalries, propelling their team to a 3-1 win over the archrival Alberta Golden Bears in Edmonton on Friday.

Trailing 1-0 after two periods in front of a big crowd at Clare Drake Arena, Josh Pillar scored the equalizer early in the third before Raphael Pelletier netted the eventual game-winner to help extend the Huskies’ program-record undefeated start to nine straight wins.

After sweeping the bottom four teams in the preseason coaches’ poll to open the season, the Huskies faced their toughest test yet in the Golden Bears, who were themselves riding a five-game win streak entering the weekend. And early on it was the hosts, fresh off a bye week, who were the better team, outshooting the Dogs 13-4 in the first period and taking a 1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal by Jakin Smallwood.

That goal ended a shutout streak of 189:43 for Huskies goaltender Roddy Ross, and for a while it looked like it could be the difference. But after a scoreless second period during which the Huskies began to adjust to the close confines of the Golden Bears’ home rink, they found another gear in the third. After forcing a pair of neutral zone turnovers on back-to-back Alberta rushes, the Huskies broke into the Golden Bears zone and following a goalmouth scramble, Pillar lifted the loose puck over goaltender Ethan Kruger for his fourth goal of the season 1:19 into the final frame.

The freshman now has 10 points in his first nine games as a Huskie, good for a share of the team lead with Vince Loschiavo.

“Honestly coming in, I didn’t know what to expect and honestly I’m really thankful to play with the guys I do,” said Pillar, who has been centering the Huskies second line between veterans Chantz Petruic and Dawson Holt. “I don’t know if I’ve played (on a line) with that much skill and hard work, that kind of combo in my whole life, so I credit a lot of that to those guys and I’ve been playing good hockey and I want to keep that up.”

The Huskies continued to take the game to the Bears and just past the midway mark of the third, a favourable bounce off the lively Clare Drake Arena boards helped spring Pelletier and Cade Hayes on a 2-on-0 rush, which Pelletier finished off for his sixth goal of the year, also matching Loschiavo in that department.

An increasingly desperate Alberta team tried to mount a late push, but with Kruger pulled for an extra skater in the final minute, the Bears could not find a way into the Huskies zone and Gunner Kinniburgh capped off the scoring firing the puck from the centre ice faceoff dot into the middle of the open cage.

“The second period was a good period for us because it showed that we can match those guys and we can play with them, so then in the third it was moreso we weren’t so worried about them, we were more worried about us and we just kinda found those legs. We were making more plays, we were keeping it simpler,” Pillar said.

The victory is only the third in 13 games at CDA for the Huskies, who had lost five straight games on the Bears’ home ice. Saskatchewan captain Shane Collins was the only player from either team in Friday’s game who was part of the Huskies last conference road win over Alberta on September 29, 2018.

With the UBC Thunderbirds suffering their first loss of the season against Mount Royal on Friday night, the Huskies are now the only undefeated team remaining in the Canada West, albeit still in second place, two points back of the Tbirds, who have played two more games.

Saskatchewan will go for a rare road sweep of Alberta on Saturday, with the rematch set for 7 p.m. Catch all the action on the HuskieFAN app and huskiefan.ca.
