Huskies split weekend series with Pandas after wild OT game Saturday

The U of S Huskies came so close to a second straight shutout win over the University of Alberta, but the Pandas spoiled that party.

The visiting team scored the tying goal with just over five minutes left in regulation while Izzy Lajoie notched the game winner in overtime for a 2-1 win for Alberta over the Huskies.

Just one day prior, the Huskies and Camryn Drever stole the show with a 2-0 shutout at Merlis Belsher Place.

Drever had 35 saves for that shutout with Kate Ball and Kendra Zuchotzki getting the goals.

Drever was back between the pipes in the rematch on Saturday and was cool and confident throughout the game, which didn’t surprise Head Coach Steve Kook.

“When you got a goalie playing like that…the team just knows, they feel comfortable out there,” he said.

Kook acknowledged that the defense was better in front of the net in the second game than in Friday’s match.

Kelsey Hall scored the game’s first goal in the second period, a sharp angle shot that fooled Panda netminder Misty Rae who ducked down anticipating a centre pass.

The Pandas would be rewarded with several power plays in the game but couldn’t muster anything past Drever.

Tat was until almost five minutes in the game when Allison Reich pounced on a loose puck outside the crease, shooting it past a biwildered Drever.

The game would go into overtime and despite good chances on both sides, the Pandas got themselves a lucky bounce.

Izzy Lajoie took a pass in front of the net and scooped it past Drever for the game winner midway through overtime.

Kook said that according to the replay, the puck bounced off Lajoie and then Drever and then the chest of Lajoie and into the net.

That bounce gave Alberta the win and a much needed two points in the Canada West standings. Heading into Saturday’s game, the Huskies and Pandas were tied with records of 7-2.

Although the Huskies did get one point for the overtime loss, Kook is hopeful it won’t affect their final standings.

“The part that stings is your five minutes away from getting four points. The top four are just so tight, you need some separation room.”

Despite the loss, Kook said the team played well as a group, noting there wasn’t just one or two stars on the team but multiple.

Next up for the Huskies is a trip to Calgary to play the Dinos NOv. 10 and 11.
