Season opening weekend vs. MacEwan

Nov 9, 2023 | 4:24 PM

The Huskie basketball teams are at home for the November 10th-11th weekend, hosting the MacEwan Griffins. The women’s team is 2 and 0 after sweeping the Pandas in the Alberta capital last weekend. Friday’s 62-59 victory was one for the ages, as third year guard, Gage Grassick, hit a 3-point buzzer beater for the win. “Maya (Flindall) made an amazing pass, while falling”, said Grassick. “It was really cool.” “(Alberta) is going to be on one of the top contenders in USports, so coming away with two wins was really awesome.”

Saskatchewan’s women’s team had an impressive 17 and 3 season and Grassick believes there is an opportunity to be even better. “We are kind of a young/old team”, she said. “There are lots of 3rd and 4th year players. Last season we were a tight knit unit, this year we are a lot closer.”

The men’s team returns home after a 1 and 1 start to the season, following a split in Alberta. After an 86-72, November 3rd loss to the Bears, Saskatchewan pulled out an 82-79 win the next night. Fifth year guard Alex Dewar was unstoppable, pouring in 30 points. The fifth year guard was named the Huskies’ male athlete of the week. Saskatchewan is looking to rally following an injury filled 5 and 15 season, Jamie Campbell’s first as head coach. The Griffins dropped their first two games of the season to the Mount Royal Cougars.

The women’s games against the Griffins go at 6:00 pm on November 10th and 5:00 pm on November 11th at the PAC. Tip off for the men’s games are at 8:00 pm on Friday and 7:00 pm on Saturday. Tickets are available at https://usask.universitytickets.com/w/default.aspx.
