The Huskie women’s hockey team has a chance to close the gap on second the second place Mount Royal Cougars this weekend. The Cougars and Alberta are in a 2nd place tie in the Canada West standings with 26 points each, the Huskies sit in fourth spot with 20.

The Huskies split a November 17th-18th series with the first place UBC Thunderbirds before having the bye on the November 24th-25th weekend. Confidence won’t be an issue for Saskatchewan as they face another elite team in the conference. The U of S has a 5 and 2 road record. The 13 and 3 Cougars are riding a 7-game win streak and are 5 and 1 on home ice this season.

While some of Mount Royal’s top offensive players haven’t put up as many points as expected, the team has six players with double-digit point totals, 16 games into the season. “They play on big ice and they play on it well”, said head coach Steve Kook. “They make you go through layers of bodies in all the zones. They don’t allow an awful lot of shots and are a good skating club.”

Saskatchewan is well prepared for a Mount Royal team that is second in the conference in scoring, averaging nearly 3 goals per game. Huskie goaltender Camryn Drever has a sensational 1.19 goals against average in 8 appearances this season. The Cougars have eight Saskatchewan born players on the roster including Southey’s Allee Gerrard who is tied for the conference lead with 10 goals.
